What is a J-Hook with Clevis?

A J-Hook with Clevis is a specialized hook used in industrial manufacturing and vehicle transportation. As the name suggests, it combines two key components: a J-shaped hook and a clevis fastener at the connection point.

The J-hook itself has a slimmer profile than many standard hooks, which allows it to fit into places where other hooks might be too large. Its unique shape is particularly well-suited for attaching to the undercarriage of a vehicle to establish a solid, trustworthy connection for transport. The clevis is a U-shaped piece at the top of the hook that uses a pin to connect to a chain or bracket, allowing for quick and easy installation.

Advantages of a J-Hook with Clevis

J-hooks that feature a clevis offer several key benefits for securing loads, particularly in the vehicle transport industry.

  • High Strength and Durability: These hooks are engineered for uncompromising strength and are often manufactured from high-quality, forged steel like Grade 70 or Grade 80. This robust construction results in a high working load limit (WLL), with different models capable of handling loads of 5,400 lbs. to over 7,100 lbs.
  • Easy and Secure Connection: The J-shape is designed to easily latch onto the undercarriage of a vehicle, establishing a solid connection you can trust. This makes them an excellent choice for stabilizing vehicles during transport, including compact or sports cars.
  • Simple Installation and Replacement: The clevis end allows the hook to be attached quickly and easily to a 5/16” chain. A major advantage of this design is that if the hook is damaged, it can be removed and replaced without having to discard the entire chain assembly.
  • Corrosion Resistance: To ensure a long and durable service life, some clevis J-hooks are plated for corrosion resistance.
