A Stainless Steel Long D Shackle with a Key Pin is a strong, corrosion-resistant connector. The “D” shape handles in-line loads well. The key pin, a bolt secured by a cotter pin, offers maximum security for long-term or critical lifting operations, preventing accidental loosening.
Stainless steel is perfect for shackles because it resists rust and corrosion exceptionally well. This makes it ideal for marine use or harsh chemical environments. Its strength and durability ensure a long service life with very little maintenance, making it a reliable and cost-effective choice.
The material’s properties directly impact performance.
A Long D shackle has a longer internal space than a standard D shackle. This design is ideal for connecting to multiple lifting points. It provides more room to attach slings or hardware, offering greater versatility for specific rigging jobs where a standard shape is too restrictive.
The “D” shackle, also known as a chain shackle, is designed for in-line tension. The straight sides take the load very efficiently without twisting. The “long” variation extends those consecutive sides. I often explain this to customers by comparing it to needing a bigger key ring for more keys. Sometimes, you need more space.
Here is a simple table to help you decide.
| Situation | Standard D Shackle | Long D Shackle |
|---|---|---|
| Connection Point | Single sling eye, narrow anchor. | Multiple sling eyes, thick plate. |
| Load Type | Best for single, in-line pulls. | Good for in-line pulls, allows more room. |
| Clearance | Less internal clearance. | More internal clearance. |
This added length provides flexibility. However, you must never forget that D shackles are not designed for side loading. The load must always be pulled straight through the center line, from the pin to the top of the bow.
A key pin, a bolt-style pin secured with a cotter pin (or split pin), provides superior security. It cannot unscrew from vibrations. This makes it the best choice for permanent or long-term installations, or any lift where the load might rotate or shake.
Let’s look at the differences.
